I will be continuing this series with some of Hemant Kumar's duets. There is no doubt that his best duets are with Lata. Here is a very soothing duet, music and lyrics by Ravi. The lyrics lead from one line to the next, as does the music. And the male and female voices are aptly interleaved to make the song sound like a dialog, ending with "ham tumhaare hu_e tum hamaare hu_e pyaar kaa muskuraayaa hai jahaa.N" - just the elements needed for a romantic duet. I really admire the way songs used to carry the story forward in old movies. I felt this even more while watching Pyaasa recently. Each song - right from "Jaane kya tune kahi" to the ending "Ye mahalon ye takhton" carried the movie forward by at least 2/3 dialog-scenes. And in contrast, Lata's "Jiya jale" in Dil Se was an interruption to the flow of the story. Anyways let me stop this reminiscencing digression. Although I haven't seen the film Albeli, I am sure this 3 min song replaced a hundred dialogs - my most favorite duet:
