Dil kii umangen hai javaan

RMIM Thread

Rejuvenating this hibernating series with a bubbly duet(or trio?) from Munimji.

SDB always experimented with different playback singers for the same hero in a movie. In fact there wasn't a single SDB movie in which Hemant Kumar sang all the songs in the hero's voice. But inspite of that Hemant Kumar's numbers always managed to outperform the other male songs, save a couple of exceptions like Manzil (chhupke se mile pyaase - Rafi/Asha, ref. Hemant-da series #8) and this movie. Kishore Kumar's 'Jeevan ke safar mein raahi' was surely a greater commercial success than this song, but that doesn't belittle the sheer beauty of this duet - which is also probably the only 'balanced' duet of Hemant under SDB(the other duets I can remember are 'Chandni raaten'(Jaal) and 'Pichhe pichhe aakar'(House No 44) biased towards Lata and 'Na tum hame jaano'(Baat ek raat ki) biased towards Hemant).

Apart from Hemant Kumar, Geeta Dutt is also at her shokh/ naughty best in this song, particularly in the dialogs in Nalini Jaywant's voice.

This is one of the most hilarious songs I have seen that does not feature a comedian. The picturisation of this song is so nice that I cannot restrain from describing it along with the lyrics: A young tour guide Dev Anand, (who also masquerades as an old Munimji in the movie and later sings 'shivji bihane chale'), is escorting Nalini Jaywant and her suitor Pran on an afternoon strol. And of course the objective is to get rid of 'third wheel' Pran.

Dev Anand strumming on guitar, formally dressed Pran and a gorgeous Nalini Jaywant out for a walk...

hemant: dil kii uma.Nge.N hai javaa.N
ra.Ng mei.n Duubaa hai samaa
mai ne tumhe jiit liyaa
haar ke dono jahaa.N

(Dev exchanging meaningful glances with Nalini Jaywant to get Pran to sing)

geeta: (dialog)
aap bhi gaaiye naa? kya mushkil hai.N?
saragam bataau.N?
pa ma pa dha pa ga sa pa
dil kii uma.Nge.N hai javaa.N - gaaiye

pran : (flustered and out of tune)
dil kii uma.Nge.N hai javaa.N
geeta :(in mock admiration)
bahut achchhe
pran: ra.Ng mei.n Duubaa hai samaa
geeta: vaah vaah vaah
hemant: dil kii uma.Nge.N hai javaa.N
aa haa haa haa haa haa haa
geeta: gaaiye gaaiye gaaiye
pran: o ho ho ho ho ho ho
geeta: kyaa kahane

(Dev Anand goes ahead now)
hemant: o~o~o~o~o~
sadiyo.N puraanii yeh zameen
hai aaj kitanii hasiin
aataa nahi.N hai yakiin
hotaa nahi.N hai bayaan

geeta:(dialog) aap bhi gaaiye
pran: (more confident but still besura)
dil kii uma.Nge.N hai javaa.N
ra.Ng mei.n Duubaa hai samaa
geeta : jio jio
pran: mai ne tumhe jiit liyaa
(goes out of chord. Dev corrects him at the appropriate line)
hemant: unn hnn mai ne tumhe jiit liyaa
haar ke dono jahaa.n
dil kii uma.Nge.N hai javaa.N

(Dev signals Nalini J. to cover Pran's eyes while he steals a favor and continues...)

bhiige nazaro.N se kaho
gaati havaao.N se kaho o~o
jaati bahaaro.N se kaho
ruk jaaye aaj yahaa.N

dil kii uma.Nge.N hai javaa.N

geeta: gaaiye naa - kyaa mazaa aa rahaa hai
(hums along) hmm~hmm~hmm~hm
pran:(irritated) dil kii uma.Nge.N hai javaa.N
ra.Ng mei.n Duubaa hai samaa
hemant: mai ne tumhe jiit liyaa
haar ke dono jahaa.n

hemant: o~o~o~o~o
geeta: hmm~hmm~hmm~hmm
bechain tanhaaiyaaN
letii hai.N angraaiyaa.N
halki sii shahanaaiyaa.N
bajati hai.N jaane kahaa.N

(dialog) gaaiye naa ek baar aur

pran:(in a rage)
dil kii uma.Nge.N hai javaa.N (snarls)
ra.Ng mei.n Duubaa hai samaa
(Dev spots a donkey nearby)

hemant:
(addressing the donkey)
mai ne tumhe jiit liyaa
haar ke dono jahaa.n

geeta: (dialog) aaiye naa aap bhi nachiye

(and purposefully mis-steps on Pran's foot. Blinded with pain Pran sits down on the nearest seat which happens to be the donkey. Dev gives a pat on the donkey and away it runs with Pran on its back. Dev and Nalini Jaywant now continue with a walk-dance- dance sequence finishing the song...)

hemant/geeta: dil kii uma.Nge.N hai javaa.N (snarls)
ra.Ng mei.n Duubaa hai samaa
hemant: mai ne tumhe jiit liyaa
geeta: unn hnn - mai ne tumhe jiit liyaa
hemant/geeta: haar ke dono jahaa.n
hmm~ hmm~ hmm~ hmm~

There was a debate sometime back about the playback singer for Pran, because HMV always credits Thakur with the song. I think somebody on RMIM , most probably Surjit-ji, had clarified that its was Pran who actually sang the song.
